If you haven't been living under the rock for the past few weeks, you probably heard the hype about Adam Christopher's debut novel Empire State, published by Angry Robot Books. Usually when there is such hype going about, there are only two things that can happen. Either the novel is really that good, or something happened that blew mediocre book out of all sensible proportions. Well, we're happy to report that Empire State is a lot closer to the first alternative that the latter.
Empire State is a book about a hole in the reality which was created during the battle of the two superheroes. This hole leads to parallel universe in which alternative 30s New York is filled with all the usual steampunk paraphernalia. Adam Christopher creates fantastic atmosphere reminiscent of movie Dark City and since all this is wrapped around interesting noir pulp detective story, Empire State works on many levels and in the end provides very satisfying read.
We wholeheartedly recommend this debut novel and look forward to the recently announced sequel.
