As soon as you see it for the first time, even though you have never heard about it before, Blackbirds is the book that will capture your eyes. Joey Hi-Fi's cover art is so stunning that it is almost hard to open the book itself because you just want to watch it and watch it (how about making a poster of it, Angry Robot Books?). Thankfully once you do, you will not regret it for a second as Blackbirds is as good as the cover art, if not better.
At it's heart Blackirds is very original and imaginative horror novel, and even though it is marketed as urban fantasy, it is not typical example of the genre. Through 300+ pages, we follow the bloody trail of Miriam Black, a trully interesting and smart mouthed heroine who has a power to know when someone will die. For the fear of spoiler, we will say no more but rest assured, death is aplenty in these pages. Through scenes of awful things and vile villains, Chuck Wending succeeds in painting morbid and violent landscape and even though sometimes we felt we reached the point of unease, we just couldn't keep our eyes away until we reached a stunning finale.
Blackbirds is gritty and original novel and we can't recommend it enough.
As for us, we'll count the days until it's sequel, Mockingbird, comes out.
Blackbirds is published on 24th April by Angry Robot Books and you can order it here
