REVIEW : Juliet E McKenna - Defiant Peaks (The Hadrumal Crisis Book 3)

Juliet E McKenna is weathered veteran of fantasy writing so her every new book is eagerly awaited treat. Being a final part of the so far excellent "The Hadrumal Crisis" trilogy, Defiant Peaks was anticipated with even more fervor than usual. As expected, Defiant Peaks doesn't disappoint. McKenna does what she does best and packs 500+ pages of relentless pace in this stunning wizard epic.

Defiant Peaks: The Hadrumal Crisis Book 3

The ominous synopsis tells it all:

"With many of the Wizard Council disputing Planir’s chosen course, he must look beyond the island city for allies. To Suthyfer, the controversial haven for mageborn far away in the Eastern Ocean. To Caladhria, where Corrain, Baron Halferan and Lady Zurenne believe they have finally won respite from all their trials. But absence of strife is hardly peace. The lull before winter’s storms descend from the distant northern peaks will be a short one."

Even though Defiant Peaks could potentially be read as a standalone, in my opinion you shouldn't read it before you've, at least, read the other parts of the trilogy (Dangerous Waters and Darkening Skies). But the best part is that Defiant Peaks serves as a fulfilling ending on so many levels. Apart from being the final part of the trilogy, Defiant Peaks also closes various hanging threads from the previous Einarinn novels and serves as a triumph of McKenna fantasy writing.
